How do I make my iPod restore when iTunes won't let me?

I have a 160 gb iPod Classic. I was listening to music when it started to delay. So I held down the center and menu button to restart it. It then went to say to restore it. I went to plug it into my iTunes and the screen went black and white and says "Do not disconnect." with a flashing red circle with an dash through it. Whenever I click "restore" on my itunes, it starts to and then it stops saying it has an unknown error (1439). Is there anyway to override this and make it restore? Please pretend I'm an idiot and have no idea what I'm doing. I'm not.. but it would make it 10x easier. Thank you SOOOO much.
