Sid Meier's Pirates Windows 7?

Whenever I try to run the game on my Windows 7 64bit labtop it will bring up a "run time error" message (it also will not allow the disk drive to be opened unless I close the labtop). I have tried running it in compatibility mode for XP, 2000 and 98 with no success. Am I out of luck or is there something else I can try?
