Are low rolling resistance tires better than high performance tires?

I need to put new tires on my 2000 Nissan Frontier. I want an inexpensive tire, that has decent handling and will fair well in rain, too. If I choose a low rolling resistance tire, will I be giving up a good deal of traction. This is a freeway commuter vehicle, and I don't spend much time on winding roads, but I don't want to lose grip on curving freeway overpasses and transitions etc.Giving up a small amount of handling will be acceptable if I gain some fuel efficiency. Anyone have information on this?
